[Program Note]

 Pupil of Penderecki, a prominent 20th Century composer of Poland, Jeajoon Ryu garnered critical acclaim with his <Pasacaglia for Percussion> in 2004 and through <Sinfonia da Requiem> in 2008 became world-renowned as a composer. With his diverse body of work that adheres to traditional, he has been often deemed a ‘Neo-Baroque.’ Commissioned by 2012 Seoul International Music Competition and dedicated to Violinist Ju-young Baek, ‘Caprice for Violin’ too is reminiscent of the technical aspects in the iconic works of Paganini. It exhibits, an intense and brief repetitive section is introduced by double stops, which serves the role of unifying the overarching structure of counter themes and subsidiary section of descending staccatos. Overall the resonance of the intensive and dense violin dominates the entire piece and this characteristic is still maintained throughout the subsequent theme that is melodic and sentimental. After the bridge passage, the impressive recurrence of the first theme flourishes into the denouement of the work.
